13:13Now PlayingFor decades, many of Iowa’s mid-sized towns were reliable Democratic strongholds. Cities like Burlington, Muscatine, Clinton, and Newton consistently voted blue and helped shape the state’s political identity.
But over the past decade, that political map has changed dramatically.
In this episode of On the Ground with Joe Trippi, veteran political strategist Joe Trippi sits down with Iowa political reporter Laura Belin to break down one of the most important political shifts in the Midwest: how working-class communities that once backed Democrats began moving toward Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
They discuss how economic changes, the decline of union influence, demographic shifts, and long-term frustrations in smaller industrial towns helped reshape Iowa politics. Many of these communities have faced years of economic stagnation, population decline, and young people leaving for larger cities — creating an environment where populist messaging found a receptive audience.
But the story isn’t as simple as red versus blue.
Trippi and Belin also explain why some Democrats believe those same communities could become competitive again. With economic pressures rising, new political dynamics emerging, and multiple competitive congressional races on the ballot, Iowa may once again become one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in American politics.
Understanding how these working-class towns shifted politically is key to understanding not just Iowa — but the broader changes reshaping elections across the United States.
