Wilson explains why either Republican outcome — Ken Paxton or John Cornyn — creates problems for the GOP. If Paxton becomes the nominee, Democrats get a brutally clear contrast against one of the most scandal-plagued figures in American politics. If Cornyn survives, MAGA voters may feel betrayed and lose enthusiasm. Either way, Wilson argues, Texas could become a major test of how weak Trump’s political brand has become outside his most loyal base.
The conversation then turns to James Talarico, who Wilson praises as an unusually gifted campaigner with the ability to speak about faith, values, and public service in a way that cuts through traditional partisan lines. Beschloss notes that Talarico does not sound like a typical Democrat, while Wilson argues that his strength is speaking to “the heart and the gut” rather than drowning voters in policy language.
Wilson and Beschloss also look at redistricting fights in Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, and beyond — and explain why Republican efforts to draw more GOP seats could backfire by spreading their voters too thin in a bad political environment for Trump.
If Texas becomes competitive, Wilson says, it could signal a much larger Democratic wave across the country.
