He recalls the 1962 integration of Ole Miss by James Meredith, the violence and resistance that followed, and how one university once defined by Confederate symbols eventually began the hard work of change. Stuart connects that history to today’s political moment, arguing that even in dark times, Americans cannot give up on the possibility that the country can become better.
This is a personal reflection on memory, democracy, Trumpism, civil rights, and what it means to keep faith with America.
