These agreements could potentially spare them from facing the death penalty.
According to a letter obtained by the Associated Press, the government has reached out to the families with this update as part of its efforts to find a resolution to the long-standing prosecution of the alleged terrorists, spanning over a decade.
The families were informed through the letter, dated August 1, that the Office of the Chief Prosecutor is actively engaged in negotiations and considering the possibility of entering into pre-trial agreements. While no final plea agreement has been reached, and there remains uncertainty whether one will ultimately be reached, it's acknowledged that such an agreement could eliminate the option of imposing the death penalty.
The letter further stated that military prosecutors are committed to taking into account the perspectives of the 9/11 families before accepting any potential plea deals. Recipients of the letter were also encouraged to share their thoughts or inquiries about the prospective agreements with the FBI's victim services division by the upcoming Monday deadline.
