The transformation is palpable, and Times Square's return to its former disarray is evident. The once-iconic location now bears a resemblance to its less favorable past, with a presence of homeless individuals, intoxicated transients, drug addicts, and lawbreakers, painting a picture of the Crossroads of the World that mirrors less developed regions. This resurgence of problems has ignited frustration among those who played pivotal roles in its revitalization.
In the span of a week, The Post observed instances of drug users openly partaking in crack cocaine on West 43rd Street, drug dealers conducting their illicit transactions in the vicinity of law enforcement, homeless people finding respite wherever space allows, and numerous migrants without clear purpose idling away their days.
William Bratton, a figure instrumental in the area's rejuvenation during the 1990s alongside then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, expressed concern about the present situation. "There's a mounting concern about the potential collapse of Times Square. Unless concerted efforts are taken to initiate its restoration, the prospect of actual collapse looms," he remarked. Bratton reflected on the past collaborative success, emphasizing the stronger criminal justice infrastructure that was in place then, involving courts, district attorneys, and police united against crime in Times Square—a unity that appears lacking today in 2023.
