The Democratic Party, one of the two major political parties in the United States, has a rich history that spans over two centuries. It was founded in the early 19th century as the Democratic-Republican Party by supporters of Thomas Jefferson. However, by the 1820s, it had split into two factions: the Democratic Party, led by Andrew Jackson, and the National Republican Party.
Andrew Jackson's presidency from 1829 to 1837 marked the ascendancy of the Democratic Party. During this era, the party promoted the idea of expanding suffrage and championed the common man. Jackson's policies included opposition to the Second Bank of the United States and the Indian Removal Act.
In the mid-19th century, the Democratic Party played a significant role in American politics, particularly in the lead-up to the Civil War. Prominent Democrats like Stephen A. Douglas and Franklin Pierce were central figures in the debates over slavery and its expansion into newly acquired territories.
Following the Civil War, the Democratic Party went through a period of realignment, with its power base shifting to the South, where it became associated with states' rights and segregation. It wasn't until the mid-20th century, during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, that the Democratic Party began to embrace progressive policies, such as the New Deal.
