In a conversation with the Washington Post, the 2024 GOP presidential candidate suggested that this focus on his personal life serves as an alternative target for criticism in lieu of racial remarks.
"It's like a different form of discrimination or bias," Scott expressed to the Washington Post. "You can't say I'm Black, because that would be terrible, so find something else that you can attack."
Furthermore, Scott believes that other Republican contenders may be attempting to cast doubt on his campaign by leveraging insinuations about his personal life to create a sense of disconnection. While Scott's campaign has declined to disclose the identity of his girlfriend to the Post, the senator and those close to him assert that he is not gay.
