Newsweek Embarrassingly 'Walks Back' Fake News Story About Tucker Carlson's Russian TV Launch

Newsweek was forced to retract or "walk back" an article that falsely claimed Tucker Carlson had launched his own show on Russian state television. The original article, titled "Tucker Carlson Launches Show on Russian State TV," cited footage of Carlson's show on X (formerly Twitter) being aired on Russia 24, dubbed in Russian. As of Tuesday afternoon, Newsweek updated the piece, retitling it to "Tucker Carlson Show Aired by Russian State TV" and clarified that Carlson did not initiate any such launch.

“That Newsweek story is totally false,” stated the head of programming for the Tucker Carlson Network (TCN) to the Washington Examiner. “Any use of our content by that channel is without legal permission.”

TCN CEO Neil Patel also responded on X, asserting that the network “has not done any deals with state media in any country” and criticized Newsweek for not verifying the information before publishing.

The airing of clips from Carlson’s show by Russian state television follows his interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin a few months ago. This marked the first interview the Kremlin granted to a U.S.-based journalist since the onset of the Ukraine conflict. During the interview, Putin characterized the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as having “an element of a civil war,” reiterating his previous claims that Russians and Ukrainians are “one people.”

Despite the interview, Putin expressed disappointment, stating he did not receive “full satisfaction” from his interaction with Carlson. He expected Carlson to be more “aggressive” and to pose “so-called sharp questions.” The Kremlin noted Putin was surprised by Carlson’s patience, which differed from his expectations of a "Western journalist."

In December, Tucker Carlson launched his own streaming platform, the Tucker Carlson Network, offering a mix of free content and additional interviews accessible via a monthly subscription.
