Georgia Court Puts the Brakes on Fani Willis' Bogus RICO Case Against President Trump

In a significant setback for the Fulton County District Attorney, the Georgia Court of Appeals on Wednesday paused any proceedings related to the 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants until it hears the case to disqualify Fani Willis in October. The appeals court has tentatively scheduled a hearing for October 4 to consider the appeal by Trump and his co-defendants to disqualify Willis from the case due to an alleged improper affair with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

This decision solidifies that Willis' extensive racketeering case against Trump will not go to trial before the November 2024 election. Trump was indicted in August, along with 18 co-defendants, after a years-long investigation led by Willis and Georgia state prosecutors into his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state. The charges include violations of the Georgia RICO Act, solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer, conspiracy to commit impersonation of a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery, and other related offenses.

Willis has faced numerous challenges in her efforts to try Trump before the election. In March, Fulton Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee dismissed six of the charges, citing insufficient detail for counts of "solicitation of violation of oath by public officer." In February, GOP operative and co-defendant Michael Roman accused Willis of an improper affair with Wade, which other co-defendants corroborated, alleging financial benefits from their relationship.

Both Wade and Willis denied any romantic involvement before his hiring, claiming they split travel costs, with Willis reimbursing Wade in cash. Judge McAfee later ordered Wade's removal from the case to prevent Willis' disqualification, citing a significant appearance of impropriety.
