Biden’s intention in agreeing to an unprecedentedly early general election debate was to frame the contest as a choice between himself and a former president who attempted to subvert democracy. Democrats, already grappling with doubts about Biden’s age and stamina, must now confront the potential fallout from a performance that raised more questions than it answered about their candidate’s readiness to lead for another term.
