Throughout the debate, Biden appeared weak, wheezy, decrepit, and overwhelmed, with moments of indignation failing to mask his vulnerability. The persistent repetition of phrases like “the idea!” underscored his advanced age. This performance, undeniably poor, invalidated claims that Biden remains sharp and vigorous behind the scenes; such assertions now deserve skepticism. If not for Biden's halting and weak presentation, Trump’s disjointed assertions on topics like tariffs, January 6, and deficit spending might have caused him more trouble. However, Trump displayed greater discipline than in the 2020 debates, offering relatively focused defenses of his record and pointed critiques of Biden, especially on late-term abortion and Afghanistan. The debate's troubling elements extended beyond Biden's senescence; neither candidate presented clear plans for governance over the next four years, particularly regarding national finances, where both seemed adrift. Their exchanges were more animated when discussing golf handicaps than substantive policy. The immediate concern remains a president who seems unfit for the responsibilities of his office now and for the foreseeable future. The palpable sense of panic and dread among Democrats is a consequence of their own decisions, highlighting an unavoidable accountability for the current situation.
