After weeks of cautioning Democrats that the American electorate was seeking change from President Biden, seasoned campaign strategist James Carville has urged the party not to become complacent about their new candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Following Biden's decision to step aside and Harris's swift ascent as the presumptive nominee, Democrats have experienced a honeymoon period. However, Carville cautioned that it's not yet time for celebration. Speaking on MSNBC, he stated, "I have to be the skunk at the garden party. This is too triumphalist, OK? Everybody’s giddy. I look at the coverage and it’s great. If I had to write a play about what I think, it’d be titled, ‘The Icepick Cometh,’ OK? Get ready, they’re coming. All right? And it’s good. Everybody should feel good and liberated and everything else. But if we don’t win the election, we haven’t done anything."

Carville, renowned for his role in Bill Clinton's 1992 election victory, emphasized the importance of not taking the election lightly. He compared the upcoming challenges to a boxing match, stating that Harris will need a "really good cutman in the corner" as she prepares for the political battles ahead. While acknowledging that Harris is performing well in the polls, he warned against overreliance on polling data.

"It’s still the same country, all right? It might be a different mood, and all I’m saying is good. Bang your helmets against the locker, it’s fine," Carville said. "But still, when you go out there, you’re facing Alabama. Just get ready because these Republicans, you’re right, they got caught off guard, but they’re going to get their sea legs and we’re having to get a campaign, a whole campaign started."

Reiterating his message, Carville stressed the need for vigilance and hard work to secure victory against former President Trump. He highlighted that the initial enthusiasm surrounding Harris must translate into sustained effort and strategic campaigning. Carville also discussed Harris’s campaign on "The Don Lemon Show," noting that while she is currently doing well, the challenges ahead will intensify.

"This is the best day that she’s going to have for the rest of the campaign, they’re coming," he said. "They were hit real bad, they were confused, but they’re getting un-confused now and Democrats have got to get ready."
