In a significant development in the upcoming presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris has declined to debate former President Donald Trump on September 4 on Fox News, insisting that the debate take place on September 10 on ABC News instead. This decision has further intensified the political clash between the two candidates.

Political insiders have noted that ABC News is perceived as being more aligned with the Democratic Party, while Fox News, despite not generally being pro-Trump, has been seen as more conservative. The involvement of Paul Ryan, former Speaker of the House, on the Fox Corporation Board of Directors, has also influenced perceptions.

"Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on September 10," said Michael Tyler, Harris campaign communications director, to Newsweek. "The Vice President will be there one way or the other to take the opportunity to speak to a prime time national audience. We’re happy to discuss further debates after the one both campaigns have already agreed to. Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anyplace should have no problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th," he added.

On Friday, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had agreed to debate Harris on Fox News on September 4. "The Debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC, but has been terminated as Biden will no longer be a participant," Trump wrote. He specified that the debate would be held in Pennsylvania, with the exact location to be determined, and would be moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. The debate rules would be similar to those from his previous debates with Biden and would include a full arena audience.

President Joe Biden and Trump had previously agreed to a debate on September 10. However, after Biden withdrew from the race, Trump's campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, indicated on July 25 that the event was canceled, stating, "[It] would be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds."

This escalating dispute over the debate schedule highlights the strategic maneuvers and heightened tensions as both campaigns gear up for the critical presidential race.
