Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, recently selected as Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate, has a contentious and multifaceted political history. In 2020, Walz faced significant criticism for his handling of the Black Lives Matter protests, which resulted in widespread looting and destruction in Minneapolis. His tenure has also seen attempts to redesign the Minnesota state flag, evoking comparisons to Somalia's flag, and controversies such as the COVID-19 nursing home scandal where many elderly lives were lost.
Walz has been an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, positioning Minnesota as a sanctuary state and pushing for youth transgender surgeries and hormone therapy. However, his military career has come under scrutiny, with fellow soldiers accusing him of embellishing and selectively omitting details about his service, and some alleging he "quit" on them.
In 1995, Walz was charged with DUI while driving at 96 mph in a 55 mph zone. Despite these controversies, he remains a vocal supporter of socialism, a stance he reiterated at a recent “White Dudes for Harris” event.
A June report by Minnesota’s legislative auditor revealed that Walz’s administration failed to properly oversee millions of federal dollars intended for feeding children, creating opportunities for fraud. Axios highlighted how this report undermines Walz’s claims that his staff deserved credit for addressing fraud. Additionally, Walz has faced backlash for his response to the Minneapolis riots after George Floyd’s death, with even Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticizing his actions.
Under Walz’s leadership, Minnesota has enacted progressive policies such as allowing minors to undergo sex-change operations, requiring schools to stock period products in boys’ bathrooms, offering free college tuition to illegal immigrants, and granting driver’s licenses to potentially 77,000 illegal aliens. His legislative record includes a lifetime score of 13 percent from Heritage Action, reflecting his radical stance during his tenure in the House of Representatives.
