Many political pundits had speculated that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro would be the ideal running mate for Kamala Harris in her presidential bid. Shapiro, a moderate Democrat from a key swing state, seemed poised to bolster the ticket’s appeal in crucial battlegrounds. However, his pro-Israel stance and support for school choice reportedly disqualified him from consideration. Instead, Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a far-left progressive whose policies align closely with those of Bernie Sanders and Gavin Newsom.

Walz's record is marked by a series of progressive "accomplishments" that cater to the Democratic Party's most liberal base. Despite Minnesota already having one of the highest income tax rates in the country—9.85% on earnings above $193,000—Walz implemented a 1% surtax on net investment income over $1 million while simultaneously reducing tax deductions. He also extended driver’s license eligibility and health insurance through the MinnesotaCare program to an estimated 81,000 illegal immigrants in the state.

A staunch advocate for "climate action," Walz mandated that public utilities generate 80% carbon-free electricity by 2030, with a goal of reaching 100% by 2040. He has also pushed for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles by requiring EV charging infrastructure near new commercial and multi-family buildings.

Walz has made Minnesota a national outlier on abortion rights, enacting some of the most permissive laws in the country, with virtually no restrictions and no consideration for minors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Walz gained a reputation for his draconian measures, including mandatory masks for children as young as five, stringent limits on outdoor gatherings, and encouraging residents to report their neighbors for social distancing violations. His administration also faced criticism for its allocation of federal COVID relief funds, spending millions on projects unrelated to the pandemic. This included $4.3 million for parking at state facilities, $1 million for a study on paid family leave, another $1 million for a gun safety ad campaign, and $7.8 million to homeless shelters in Minneapolis.

Walz’s selection as Harris’s running mate signals a clear shift towards the far-left policies that have become increasingly prominent within the Democratic Party, potentially alienating moderate voters who may have been swayed by a more centrist ticket.
