Zoraida Buxo, a nonpartisan shadow senator from Puerto Rico, is set to endorse former President Donald Trump at his rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday. NBC News’s Dasha Burns first reported Buxo’s planned appearance at the rally, which will feature multiple speakers from Puerto Rico, and journalist Jack Posobiec later confirmed that Buxo will publicly announce her support for Trump. Buxo, elected in 2021 to Puerto Rico’s statehood delegation, shared a statement from Trump on Monday reaffirming his commitment to upholding a constitutional process for Puerto Rican status resolution. Trump stated that, as president, he would ensure Congress respects the outcome of any Puerto Rican status referendum, including statehood if desired by the electorate. Buxo praised Trump as the strong leader Puerto Rico “needs” to end the territory’s “limbo.” This endorsement follows Puerto Rico’s 2020 referendum, in which 53 percent of voters favored statehood, as noted by the Associated Press. Buxo’s support comes amid Democratic criticism surrounding a controversial joke about Puerto Rico made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, which the Trump campaign has since distanced itself from, emphasizing Trump’s support for Puerto Rican rights and statehood aspirations.
