Think it's novel that McDonald's being targeted for tatting out where Luigi was? That's nothing. Think 1952. Arnold L. Schuster, a 24-year-old Brooklyn clothing salesman and distant cousin to Max Schuster of Simon & Schuster, became an amateur detective when he spotted notorious bank robber Willie "The Actor" Sutton on a subway train on February 18, 1952. Schuster followed Sutton to a garage and alerted the police, leading to Sutton's arrest while he was changing a dead car battery. This act made Schuster a minor celebrity, appearing on TV, but just weeks later, on March 8, 1952, he was brutally murdered by a lone gunman outside his home, shot in the groin and eyes. Despite an extensive manhunt, no one was arrested for Schuster's murder, though Sutton associate Frederick J. Tenuto was a prime suspect, alongside over 300 others questioned, including a local fence. The case gained further notoriety when, in 1963, Mafia informant Joseph Valachi claimed that Gambino crime family boss Albert Anastasia ordered the hit because he despised "squealers," although law enforcement remained skeptical of this link due to the unwanted attention it would bring. Schuster was buried in Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, and his estate later sued New York City for failing to protect him, leading to a landmark legal ruling that police owe a duty of protection to citizens who assist them, culminating in a $41,000 settlement from the city. Schuster's death underscored the dangers of public cooperation with law enforcement and remains an unsolved mystery, highlighting the complex interplay between crime, justice, and public safety in mid-20th century New York.
