The prolonged absence of Republican Congresswoman Kay Granger from Capitol Hill has raised serious questions about transparency and representation, culminating in revelations that the 81-year-old has been residing in a Texas memory care and assisted living facility. This disclosure, first reported by The Dallas Express, highlights a troubling lapse in communication from Granger’s office and underscores the broader concerns about aging lawmakers’ ability to fulfill their duties effectively.

Granger, who has not cast a vote since July 24, 2024, represents Texas’s 12th Congressional District, a key constituency in the GOP’s razor-thin majority in the House. Despite her significant role and the critical votes taking place during her absence, including on government funding and border security, her office remained uncommunicative. Calls to her D.C. and district offices went unanswered, and her local office was found vacated before Thanksgiving, leaving constituents without representation during a pivotal legislative period.

According to reports, Granger’s health challenges escalated over the past year, making travel to Washington "difficult and unpredictable." While her office denies she resides in a memory care facility, employees at a senior living facility in Fort Worth confirmed her residency, with the assistant executive director referring to it as “her home.” These developments have prompted criticism from local leaders and constituents alike. Tarrant County Republican Chairman Bo French described the lack of representation as “troubling,” emphasizing that it disenfranchises over two million people in her district.

State Republican Executive Committeeman Rolando Garcia expressed disappointment, calling it a “sad and humiliating way” to end Granger’s three-decade-long political career. Garcia suggested her visible decline during her 2022 reelection campaign should have prompted earlier intervention to ensure her constituents were not left without effective representation.
