Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass committed yet another glaring blunder as she continues to mishandle the wildfire crisis, leaving desperate residents without clear guidance. In a Wednesday press conference, just returning from a trip to Ghana during the crisis, Bass bizarrely directed residents to "URL" for further assistance, reading the placeholder text as though it were the actual website.
“If you need help, emergency information, resources, and shelter is available,” Bass said, but failed to provide a functioning or even coherent point of contact. Instead, she read off the script without acknowledging the error.
“All of this can be found at URL,” she continued, oblivious to the mistake, before adding, “Los Angeles: Together is how we will get through this.” The lack of awareness and professionalism sparked immediate criticism from residents and observers alike.
Bass's remarks included a plea for residents to conserve water and have emergency supplies ready, but the glaring errors in her communication overshadowed any practical advice. Her performance is emblematic of a broader dissatisfaction with leadership in Los Angeles, where citizens have grown increasingly frustrated with the handling of the crisis by both Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom.
Bass’s absence at the critical onset of the wildfires, as she attended the inauguration of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, has only fueled public outrage. Her decision to prioritize international travel over the safety of her constituents was compounded by her administration's history of slashing essential services, including nearly $20 million from the city’s fire department budget for the current fiscal year. When asked if she regretted the budget cuts or owed the public an apology for her absence, Bass remained silent.
This disaster has amplified growing dissatisfaction with Governor Gavin Newsom as well, whose emphasis on progressive policies, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, has been criticized for diverting resources and attention away from critical public safety measures.
