The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is facing renewed scrutiny following a deadly midair collision between an American Airlines plane and a Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, DC, which claimed 67 lives. A class-action lawsuit filed against the FAA alleges that over 1,000 qualified air traffic controller candidates were denied jobs due to the agency’s diversity hiring policies. The lead plaintiff, Andrew Brigida, claims the FAA, under the Obama administration, shifted from a skill-based hiring system to a “biographical assessment” aimed at increasing minority representation, leading to the rejection of highly qualified applicants, including himself, despite scoring 100% on his training exam. Criticism intensified after reports revealed that staffing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s control tower was “not normal” at the time of the crash, with one controller performing the duties of two due to years of understaffing. President Trump and others have blamed the FAA’s diversity initiatives for contributing to the staffing crisis and lower standards. Brigida, now an FAA program manager, hopes Trump’s administration will address the crisis swiftly. The FAA and the Department of Transportation are currently contesting the lawsuit, which is set for trial early next year.
