Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, media icon, and best-selling author, has stepped into podcasting with her brother Craig Robinson on their show "IMO (In My Opinion)," backed by the Obamas’ media company, Higher Ground. Launched in March 2025 with a glitzy rollout and high-profile guests like Issa Rae, Seth Rogen, and Keke Palmer, the podcast was expected to dominate. Instead, it’s become a national punchline, earning a reputation as a snooze-fest. Spotify ranks "IMO" at a dismal 34th among podcasts, far behind Amy Poehler’s "Good Hang," which launched later but soared to second on Apple and third on Spotify. Apple Podcasts places the Obama siblings at 19th, trailing behind Mel Robbins, Kylie Kelce, and Joe Rogan—a humbling fall for someone used to commanding global stages.
The podcast’s debut episode, “You Should Start a Podcast with Your Sibling,” feels like a warning unheeded. Michelle and Craig’s chemistry isn’t terrible, but it’s painfully safe and mundane, like plain toast or lukewarm tea. Craig brings little excitement, and their conversations—like the Issa Rae-featured “Some Friendships Need to Go”—lack depth, ironically pushing listeners away. Even Higher Ground’s production prowess, which delivered hits like "Rustin," can’t save it. The numbers are stark: "IMO" struggles with low engagement, and Michelle’s YouTube channel, where the podcast is also shared, has just 67,000 subscribers—dwarfed by Alex Cooper’s "Call Her Daddy" at 1.2 million. For a woman who once captivated the world, this podcast feels like a TED Talk to an empty room. Listeners keep waiting for a spark, but nothing ignites. It’s a flop that’s as shocking as it is boring, proving even the Obama name can’t guarantee a hit when the content fails to connect.
