An ATF ballistics analysis reportedly failed to definitively match the bullet fragment recovered from the autopsy to the rifle tied to Robinson, which introduces reasonable doubt because ballistics is supposed to be one of the strongest links between a weapon and a crime. When that link comes back inconclusive, it matters. Then there is the issue of the gun detection dogs, which are trained to detect the scent of gunshot residue from a recently fired weapon, yet reports indicate they did not alert to the presence of the rifle at the scene. That absence does not prove anything on its own, but it adds another layer of uncertainty. Yes, Robinson’s DNA was reportedly found on the rifle, but if it was his rifle, his DNA being on it is exactly what you would expect, and DNA shows contact, not necessarily that he fired the weapon at that moment.
