Chemically, carbon 60 is a spherical molecule composed of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a structure resembling a soccer ball, known in chemistry as a fullerene. What makes this molecule notable is its ability to act as a free radical scavenger, meaning it can neutralize reactive oxygen species that contribute to oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress is involved in a wide range of biological processes including cellular aging, inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. The theoretical appeal of carbon 60 lies in its electron affinity and stability, which allow it to interact with and potentially neutralize multiple free radicals without being rapidly degraded. This has led some researchers to describe it as a reusable antioxidant, though that concept is still being examined.
Because carbon 60 is not water soluble, it is dissolved in lipid carriers such as olive oil or MCT oil. These lipids function as bioavailability enhancers, helping facilitate absorption through the digestive tract and transport into systemic circulation. Once absorbed, it is hypothesized that the compound may associate with cell membranes and mitochondria where oxidative activity is highest.
Preclinical studies, particularly in animal models, have suggested possible effects on lifespan extension, reduced inflammatory markers and improved metabolic efficiency. However, there is limited human clinical data. Large scale controlled trials are lacking, so conclusions about efficacy and long term safety remain uncertain.
Topical formulations apply the same antioxidant concept to the skin, where oxidative stress contributes to collagen breakdown and visible aging.
From a scientific standpoint, carbon 60 represents a compound with a plausible biochemical mechanism but incomplete clinical validation in humans.
