According to proponents of this hypothesis, attention should be paid not merely to the immediate surroundings but also to every object in close proximity to the victim, including microphones, audio packs and other broadcast equipment that may have been present during public appearances or events. Supporters of the theory argue that microphones are often overlooked because they are viewed as harmless accessories rather than potential repositories of forensic evidence.
Investigators in any complex case routinely examine electronics for fingerprints, DNA, damage patterns, residue, chain of custody and digital records. Microphones, recording devices and communication equipment can reveal who handled them, when they were used and whether they contain evidence relevant to reconstructing a timeline of events. In high-profile incidents, seemingly mundane objects sometimes become critically important pieces of evidence.
At present, however, there is no publicly available evidence supporting claims involving an exploding microphone or similar device in any real-world case.
