Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Committee Chairman Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Committee Member Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) will hold a Field Hearing at the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, Monday, November 23, 2015, titled, "America's Heroin Epidemic at the Border: Local, State and Federal Law Enforcement Efforts to Combat Illicit Narcotic Trafficking." The Field Hearing will feature two panels of testimony from Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, Cochise County, Arizona Sheriff Mark Dannels, Arizona High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Executive Director Dawn Mertz, National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, and The Salvation Army's Public Advisory Board/Public Policy Member Jeff Taylor. The senators will hold a media availability immediately following the hearing.
"I am pleased that Chairman Johnson has agreed to hold this hearing in Arizona, which is ground zero in the fight against heroin trafficking from Mexico to the United States, and has set-off an epidemic in heroin abuse across our nation," said Senator John McCain. "The narcotics being transported through Arizona are poisoning America's children and fueling drug-related violence throughout the Western Hemisphere. I commend Governor Ducey's leadership in creating of an anti-drug trafficking strike force, and look forward to discussing ways to support and strengthen his Administration's efforts, which can be used as a national model. This hearing will also provide important expert perspective and information on the threats America faces today from international drug cartels and how local, state, and federal government can work together to combat these criminal organizations."
"Arizona is on the frontline in the battle against drug cartels and the rising epidemic of heroin in this country," said Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. "We know through intelligence reports that Arizona is a gateway for the cartels to push illicit drugs through to the rest of the country. It is time for this to stop. I am grateful for Senator McCain's assistance in our efforts to combat these cartels and for Chairman Johnson's willingness to conduct a field hearing here in order to highlight the unique challenges facing our state."
