On Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at approximately 9:07 AM, Tempe Police responded to an armed robbery of a Walgreens pharmacy, located at 6404 S. McClintock Dr. Tempe. The suspect entered the store and went to the pharmacy where he jumped over the counter and stated he had a firearm as he had his hand in a black bag. The suspect demanded liquid Narcotics from the pharmacist as he threatened to kill them. The victims handed over an unknown quantity of liquid Narcotics.
As officers were responding to the area, the following description of the suspect was provided: a black male, 6’00”, thin build, wearing a black shirt, ski mask, grey sweat pants and sneakers, and carrying a black bag.
A responding Tempe police officer located a black male wearing grey sweat pants and no shirt, carrying a black bag at Rural and Guadalupe and attempted to contact him. As the officer got out of his vehicle he asked if he could speak to the subject at which time the subject stated he did not want to talk and ran from the officer.
An approaching uniformed Tempe police lieutenant in a marked patrol vehicle saw the suspect running from the officer and followed the suspect into the south parking lot of the Westchester Senior Living Center, located at 6100 S. Rural Rd. Tempe. The lieutenant got out of his vehicle and attempted to contact the suspect at which time a confrontation took place, during which the lieutenant fired one round from his gun. The suspect was hit once and was able to flee on foot through the Westchester facility and ran into the maintenance room. An employee saw the suspect enter the room and pointed out the suspect’s location to responding officers.
The police lieutenant was transported to the hospital with minor injuries sustained during the incident.
Portions of the Westchester Senior Living Center were evacuated during the police response. Those evacuated went to the Albertson’s grocery store at Rural and Guadalupe where they waited till the area was clear.
Officers were able to isolate the suspect’s location and waited for tactical officers to respond to the scene. Contact was made approximately one hour into the investigation at which time the suspect was located deceased inside the maintenance office.
Evidence obtained during the investigation confirms that the suspect shot is the same suspect of the robbery at the Walgreens pharmacy.
At this time this is an active investigation as we are continuing to investigate and process the scenes
