0:34Now PlayingA dump truck lost control in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood Monday morning, hitting a pedestrian and three cars before barreling through a Subway restaurant on Yesler Way.
Seattle Fire says four people were injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center, one of them in serious condition.
According to Seattle Police, it all started about 9:30 a.m. when the dump truck “suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure” and began rolling uncontrollably at the intersection of James Street and Second Avenue. That’s where the dump truck struck a pedestrian, a 25-year-old woman, whose injuries are considered serious.
The driver reportedly tried to steer the truck through traffic, but struck three vehicles in the 100 block of James Street before crashing into the Subway.
There was one employee inside the Subway. The worker was taken to Harborview with minor injuries, along with the drivers of two vehicles that were hit. The two drivers also reportedly suffered only minor injuries. The three people who had minor injuries are a 44-year-old man, a 51-year-old man and a 73-year-old man.
A witness said she saw the dump truck speeding down James Street going at least 40 mph. She said people were screaming, and she watched someone get hit right in front of her office building.
The entire multi-story building that houses the restaurant has been evacuated because of structural damage. James Street is closed between 1st and 4th Avenues while crews clean up and police investigate.
