Prosecutors requested that independent attorneys be appointed for the Crumbleys individually to avoid a conflict of interest later on in the proceedings. Prosecutors suggested that the Crumbleys desire to keep lawyers from the same law firm could be part of a plot to get a mistrial declared in the case. The judge agreed and appointed independent attorneys to each of the Crumbleys.
