Deakins testified about doing drugs with Cruz's mother, Brenda Woodard, and the time when Woodard told her she was pregnant with Cruz. Deakins said Woodard had always planned to give the baby up for adoption. After describing how Woodard didn't want the baby, Deakins apologized to Cruz, saying "I'm sorry Nikolas but that's just the way it was."
