5:06Now PlayingVice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz are set to take the stage at a campaign rally in Glendale, Arizona. One of the invited speakers at the rally is John Giles, the Republican mayor of Mesa - Arizona's third largest city. Giles, a "life-long" Republican, threw his support behind Harris and criticized Donald Trump during his remarks.
"The Republican party has been taken over by extremists that are committed to forcing people in the center of the political spectrum out of the party," Giles said. "So in the spirit of the great Senator John McCain, please join me in putting country over party and stopping Donald Trump."
Giles has a history of crossing political party lines. He was censured in 2022 by the Arizona Republican party for endorsing the Democrat Mark Kelly in his ultimately successful bid for the Senate.
Other Republicans have come out to endorse Harris, including Geoff Duncan, the former lieutenant-governor of Georgia, and the Christine Todd Whitman, the former governor of New Jersey.
