1:01Now PlayingSevere flooding was seen in parts of Atlanta, Georgia, in the early morning hours of Friday, September 27, as Hurricane Helene made landfall in northern Florida.
Footage filmed by local resident Fernanda Badajoz shows a person and their belongings floating on an inflatable mattress, as well as rescue crews in small boats amid submerged cars at the Peachtree Park Apartments.
WSBTV reported 25 people were rescued from the apartment complex, which is located alongside Peachtree Creek. The evacuees were temporarily sheltered in city buses, the report said.
The City of Atlanta declared a flash flood emergency and said multiple water rescues were carried out overnight and into the morning on Friday.
The National Weather Service said Helene, which was downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall, was producing “historic and catastrophic flooding” across the southeast and southern Appalachia
