Speaking at a news conference in Jordan, Blinken was the first U.S. official to publicly acknowledge these contacts between the Biden administration and HTS. He also signed off on a set of principles alongside officials from eight Arab nations, Turkey, the EU, and the UN to guide Syria's transition to a peaceful, nonsectarian, and inclusive country. Blinken did not disclose details of the conversations with HTS but emphasized the importance of sending messages about the group's conduct and plans for governance.
