23:59:12Now PlayingMillions are dealing with a massive winter storm as a huge swath of the U.S. was blasted with ice, snow and wind on Monday. The polar vortex that dipped south over the weekend kept much of the country east of the Rockies in its frigid grip, making many roads treacherous, forcing school closures, and causing widespread power outages and flight cancellations.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for Kansas and Missouri, where blizzard conditions brought wind gusts of up to 45 mph. The warnings extended to New Jersey into early Tuesday.
Ice, snow, and wind has led to major power outages, with hundreds of thousands of customers without power early Monday across Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri.
Starting Monday, the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. would be dealing with frigid temperatures and wind chills, forecasters said. Temperatures could be 12 to 25 degrees below normal.
