10:08Now PlayingThe Hughes Fire broke out around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
The fire has burned more than 5,000 acres in just a few hours.
Thousands are under evacuation orders between Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
FOX 11 Los Angeles reporter Hailey Winslow reports from the frontlines of the fire, where inmate crews were lighting controlled fires in an attempt to slow the spread of the Hughes Fire.
Crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Angeles National Forest are also battling the blaze, which is burning in heavy fuels, creating the potential for "a rapid rate of spread," officials said.
California Highway Patrol has closed the southbound 5 Freeway at Grapevine Road. That means the entire freeway will be closed in both directions between Grapevine Road and SR-126 due to the Hughes Fire.
