3:12Now PlayingAn American Airlines flight in route from New York's JFK Airport to New Delhi war diverted to Rome. A spokesman with the Leonardo da Vinci Airport said security checks would be performed as soon as the 199 passengers on board leave the plane. Two fighter jets were filmed flying over the airport before the plane landed.
The New York Post reports American Airlines Flight 292 made an abrupt U-turn due to a 'possible security issue.' NY Post says American Airlines issued the following statement: “Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding."
American Airlines said in a statement: "American Airlines flight 292, with service from New York (JFK) to Delhi (DEL), diverted to Rome (FCO) due to a possible security concern. The flight landed safely at FCO, and law enforcement inspected and cleared the aircraft to re-depart. Safety and security are our top priorities and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."
According to officials, the possible issue was determined to be non-credible, but per DEL Airport protocol, an inspection was required before landing at DEL.
