3:37Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump was asked about the cuts coming to the Department of Education during a sit-down meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the Oval Office.
"When we cut, we want to cut the people who aren't working or who aren't doing a good job," Trump said.
Trump's remarks come after reports that half of the Education Department workforce will be terminated.
"We want education to be moved back where the states run education, where the parents of the children will run education, where governors who are doing a very good job will run education," Trump added.
When Trump took office, the agency's workforce numbered 4,133 employees. That will shrink to around 2,183 workers, the department said in a news release.
About 259 employees were accepted into the deferred resignation program and another 313 accepted buyouts. Remaining workers impacted by the reductions will be placed on administrative leave beginning March 21.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon additionally sent a letter to all staff on her first day on the job in March saying she will lead a "momentous final mission" to send education back to the states.
"Today's reduction in force reflects the Department of Education's commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers," McMahon said in a statement.
