The university's interim president, Katrina Armstrong, confirmed the searches in a statement, expressing her heartbreak over the incident but reassuring the community that "no one was arrested or detained" during the searches. She emphasized that no items were removed and no further action was taken by the agents. University Public Safety remained on-site throughout the operation, which was a legal requirement to comply with the warrants.
The situation escalated Friday with the arrest of Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian student from the West Bank, who was detained for overstaying her student visa. Kordia's visa had been terminated in January 2022 due to “lack of attendance,” and she had previously been arrested in connection with pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia in April 2024, according to DHS.
Additionally, federal immigration authorities revoked the visa of Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian doctoral student, accusing her of "advocating for violence and terrorism." Srinivasan voluntarily left the country on Tuesday, five days after her visa revocation.
The university continues to comply with the legal proceedings, while federal immigration authorities pursue their investigations.
