It will be the department's first briefing since an American man who was held captive in Afghanistan for over two years has been freed by the Taliban and is now on U.S. soil.
George Glezmann, an American held captive by the Taliban for over two years, has been released without a prisoner swap, facilitated by Qatari negotiators and the Trump administration.
Glezmann's release is seen as a goodwill gesture by the Taliban to improve ties with the U.S., amid ongoing tensions following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
The U.S. continues to negotiate for the release of other detained Americans, with the fate of Afghan-American businessman Mahmood Habibi still unknown.
