Now PlayingNOW: Protests continue in Los Angeles in reaction to harsh immigration enforcement by ICE. Although they began peacefully, the demonstrations have grown more intense, with some incidents of property damage, objects being thrown at police, and officers responding with tear gas and flashbangs. In reaction, President Donald Trump sent over 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to the city.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass have strongly opposed the federal action, calling it both unconstitutional and politically driven. Newsom has taken legal action against the federal government, arguing that sending in troops without state approval goes beyond federal authority and violates state rights.
The situation has gained national and international attention, with labor unions, civil rights groups, and global leaders criticizing the use of military force against civilians and the stifling of protests. Despite the large military presence, people continue to protest, demanding an end to the ICE raids and the removal of federal troops.
