Los Angeles police later reported that the driver had been shot. Investigators are now searching for a suspect who fled the scene.
It remains unclear whether the driver was shot before or after the crash or what motivated the incident, an LAPD spokesperson said.
Police said 23 victims were taken to area hospitals and trauma centers. At least three were listed in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles City Fire Department.
Fire Captain Adam Van Gerpen stated that the victims — most of them women — were standing in line outside a nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood when they were struck by a Nissan Versa, which also crashed into a taco truck and valet stand.
