5:23Now PlayingNew York City Mayor Eric Adams announced he is continuing his bid for reelection on Saturday, after days of speculation that he may drop out of the race.
Adams made the announcement at a press conference on Friday.
"I'm running for reelection, and I'm going to tell New Yorkers every day why I believe I should be the mayor of the city of New York in 2026," Adams said.
Adams also called out Andrew Cuomo, calling him "a snake and a liar," who "has had a career of pushing Black candidates out of races."
He also repeatedly claimed he believed he is the only other candidate in the race who could potentially beat Zohran Mamdani, referring to Mamdani and Cuomo both as "spoiled brats… born with silver spoons in their mouths. Not like working class new Yorkers. I'm a working class New Yorker. They are not like us. They've never had to fight. They never had to struggle. They never had to go through difficult times like you and I had to go through New Yorkers."
Earlier this week, several reports surfaced suggesting President Donald Trump may offer Adams a position in his administration. Both The New York Times and Politico report that Trump was considering Adams for an adviser role connected to a possible ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia. Adams had repeatedly denied the claims, vowing to stay in the race, but did not address the rumors on Friday.
Shortly after Adams' announcement, Trump during a press conference denied offering Adams an ambassadorship. "No I didn't do that," Trump said. "No, I wouldn't do that."
Regardless, Trump said he was concerned about whether a crowded ballot could ultimately lead to Mamdani, who he calls a communist, being elected. Earlier this week, Trump said he wanted two candidates to drop out, in order to have a "one on one" election.
"The only way you're going to beat the communist — because you have a communist running, which is fine…It would seem to me that if he stays in, if you have more than one candidate running against him, it can't, you know, it can't be won," Trump said, adding that he believes Cuomo would have a shot at beating Mamdani in a one-on-one race.
The election is on Nov. 4, 2025.
