Many experts say this is likely to thrust the world into a nuclear situation it has not faced in many decades. The nuclear arms treaty, which is the last of its kind in the world, was originally established between the U.S. and Russia. The relapse of the agreement, known as 'New START,' is being viewed with concern by arms control advocates, who worry about the risk of a new arms race. LiveNOW’s Austin Westfall is learning more about what comes next with retired Marine Intelligence Officer, Hal Kempfer.
"Up until now, both countries have planned their respective nuclear modernization programs based on the assumption that the other country is not going to exceed those central limits," Matt Korda, associate director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists recently said. "Without those central limits … both countries are going to be reassessing their programs to accommodate a more uncertain nuclear future."
