Rep. Kiley recently made the announcement and says the change is taking place immediately. Reports from California indicate that the two-term congressman is facing a tough reelection battle following the redrawing of the state's congressional boundaries.
The move from Rep. Kiley might cause problems for Speaker Mike Johnson as the GOP leader looks to hold onto a thin 217-214 majority in the House, now with one independent. According to the Associate Press, the last independent representative to serve in the House was Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, who dropped his Republican affiliation in 2019.
