On June 25, 2026, I went to Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association headquarters to ask PBA President Louis Civello for comment, on camera, about a series of public controversies surrounding the union — including reports of officers who admitted misconduct being kept on payroll until pension eligibility, opposition to releasing police disciplinary records, and the union’s outsized role in local elections. I also brought my LED billboard truck, displaying news coverage of these issues, as part of my ongoing accountability journalism covering Suffolk County government and law enforcement.

When I rang the bell, Civello came out with the PBA treasurer and two others and told me it was private property and I needed to leave. I said “sure, no problem” and immediately began backing out the door and continuously backing toward my vehicle, still filming the entire time. I was grabbed and handcuffed so tightly it left my fingers numb, then arrested for criminal trespass — even though the property is not fenced or enclosed, which I believe makes the charge legally indefensible. I was held shackled to a table at the 3rd Precinct for roughly six hours and released to find my billboard truck had been towed at the PBA’s request. I believe this arrest was retaliation for my journalism and for exercising my First Amendment rights, and I’m pursuing both a criminal defense and civil claims — including for defamation — against the PBA over false statements made about me publicly after my arrest.
