Canton residents vote to audit police department over John O'Keefe murder case. The investigation into the death of Boston police officer John O'Keefe and the murder charge against his girlfriend, Karen Read, have divided the community of Canton, Massachusetts.
During a special town meeting on Monday night in Canton, Massachusetts, the community voted to conduct an audit of the police department in the midst of a contentious murder investigation.
The meeting drew over 1,700 residents who gathered to cast their votes on a divisive issue involving the inquiry into the death of Boston police officer John O'Keefe and the murder charge against his girlfriend, Karen Read.
Ultimately, the majority of participants, with a vote of 903 to 800, supported the call for an audit of the Canton Police Department during Monday's meeting. Initially, the audit had passed in an earlier hand vote, but it faced a formal challenge, prompting the need for a second vote.
A motion of no confidence in the police department, which had been on the table, was withdrawn later on Monday night.
The incident involving O'Keefe's death occurred in January 2022, when his body was discovered outside the home of Brian Albert, a fellow officer with the Boston Police Department. The night before, O'Keefe, Read, Albert, and others had been at a bar before returning to Albert's home, where Read claimed she dropped off O'Keefe.
According to prosecutors, Read allegedly struck O'Keefe with her SUV and left the scene. She has pleaded not guilty, and her defense attorneys have asserted the existence of a large-scale cover-up. This high-profile case has cast a shadow over daily life in Canton, evident in the town's residents expressing varying opinions on whether a police audit is warranted.
One resident argued during the meeting that the department already has checks and balances in place, while another countered, suggesting that an audit would ensure scrutiny of officers' compliance, highlighting concerns about the current protocols being perceived as "self-grading."
