An Atlanta-area father is facing the possibility of at least 15 years in prison after Jamaican authorities allegedly discovered two loaded ammunition magazines containing 30 rounds in his carry-on luggage during a family vacation. Igor Andrusceak says he accidentally left the loaded magazines in his backpack after believing he had removed everything from the bag before traveling. He also says the backpack passed through TSA screening at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport without the ammunition being detected.
The ammunition was discovered when Andrusceak and his family were preparing to leave Jamaica. He was detained, arrested and later charged under Jamaica's strict firearms laws. According to the reporting, Jamaica's 2022 firearms law carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years for possessing unauthorized ammunition, even without a firearm.
Andrusceak says he never intended to bring ammunition out of the United States and hopes TSA screening records and surveillance footage will help establish what happened. TSA is reviewing how the loaded magazines may have passed through airport security.
In this video, we break down what happened, why Jamaican law could expose him to such a severe sentence, what happened at the airport, and the broader lesson for American travelers and gun owners taking firearms or ammunition abroad.
