The United States national debt has officially surpassed $40 trillion for the first time in history, according to the latest U.S. Treasury Department data. This landmark $40 trillion federal debt milestone was reached in August 2026, marking an ever-deeper debt hole for America. Of the current $40 trillion total, approximately $11.5–$11.6 trillion has been added during President Donald Trump’s two terms in office. Roughly $7.8 trillion was accrued during his first term (2017–2021), largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic response and tax cuts. An additional $3.7–$3.8 trillion has been added so far in his second term (since January 2025). For comparison, the debt rose by about $8.4 trillion during the Biden administration.
