Corporate surveillance, AI pricing, data brokers, and government access are converging into an increasingly powerful public-private surveillance system. A WIRED journalist received a 515-page McDonald’s data file containing purchase history, app activity, location-related information, and algorithmic predictions about future behavior. Meanwhile, concerns over AI surveillance pricing have raised questions about how companies use behavioral data to personalize prices and offers. The government can also purchase commercially harvested location and consumer data through the data broker loophole, potentially giving federal agencies access to information collected by private companies. Now add Flock Safety. Its network of AI-powered license plate reader cameras (ALPR) spans 49 states and processes billions of vehicle scans. Sen. Josh Hawley has launched an investigation into concerns surrounding Flock cameras, national databases, and government access. When Flock cameras, location tracking, loyalty programs, consumer data, AI predictions, and government surveillance operate in the same ecosystem, they can create an increasingly detailed record of where you go, what you buy, and how you behave. The U.S. does not have China's centralized social credit system. But critics warn the infrastructure for a fragmented American version of surveillance capitalism meeting the surveillance state is already being built.
