9:33Now PlayingA federal court says it cannot rule on whether a transwoman's membership in a sorority should be revoked. Last year, six members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority filed suit after Artemis Landford, a transwoman, joined their local chapter at the University of Wyoming. However, the lawsuit in a lower court was dismissed because the judge felt unable to define what constitutes a woman for the organization or to determine her exclusion. The sorority sisters' attorney argued that the sorority council's alteration of membership criteria was unfair to existing members. Today, three judges in the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments but refrained from issuing a ruling. The University of Wyoming, the state's sole four-year public university, finds itself in the national spotlight as transgender individuals advocate for greater acceptance in the institutions' activities.
