On June 2, 2023, in Ocala, Florida, 58-year-old Lorincz shot Owens after she knocked on her door. Charged with manslaughter, not murder, Lorincz has since been released on bond after pleading not guilty. The controversy continues as prosecutors seek to include Lorincz's 911 calls in court to dispute her claim of fearing for her life. Hill, Agnew, and Pegues also discuss Florida's "Stand Your Ground" laws and whether "Castle Doctrine" provisions give shooters a free pass to use deadly force.
According to court records, Lorincz did not want her 911 calls played in court. After discussing it at a hearing on Friday, June 7, 2024, prosecutors say only calls relating to Owens will be played in court. “Her being the one who is continually confronting the children, calling them names, treating them like she has over the past year is relevant to show that her 911 call where she says she’s afraid for her life is not true,” a prosecutor said. Lorincz was originally set to appear in court on Monday, June 10, 2024, but that hearing has been canceled and jury selection for the case is set to start on June 17, 2024.
